The Illusionist
of
Sylvain Chomet

Synopsis:

- "In the late '50s, a revolution stirred the world of music-hall: the phenomenal success of rock, including young stars draw crowds, while that the traditional numbers - acrobats, jugglers, ventriloquists - are considered outdated. Our hero, the trickster, can only see that now belongs to a class of artists endangered. The contract proposals are being increasingly rare, he was forced to leave the halls of Paris and left with her doves and rabbits try his luck in London. But the situation is the same in the United Kingdom: he resigned while performing in small theaters, garden parties, cafes and pub in a village on the west coast of Scotland, where he meets Alice, a young girl who will change his life forever.
The illusionist presents his tricks in front of villagers enthusiastic and excited to celebrate the arrival of electricity on their isolated island. Alice, shocked, believes in the reality of small miracles of the magician. She follows him to Edinburgh and takes care of her apartment while working in a small theater. Delighted by his enthusiasm, the illusionist thanked by conjuring gifts more lavish. Desperate to not disappoint her, he can not bring himself to tell her that life's problems can not be solved not a magic wand ... and runs to ruin him to continue buying what he wanted done. But Alice matures and finds love ...
The Illusionist understands that it is time that the number created for it ends: it leaves its ultimate spectator experience his real life wife, far from his hocus-pocus and share in the knowledge that happy. "

Sylvain Chomet:

-" I mostly tried to keep intact the emotion that I had read the script for the first time. It had to slightly more realistic and credible The Triplets .... The animators did a fantastic job. There is no plan obtained by rotoscoping, everything comes from the imagination. I wanted that seeing the movie, you forget very quickly drawing. It was important for the end of the story and the emotion generated by the characters.
In the Triplets ... there are about 1,400 planes, which is quite usual for an animated film. In it, we have 400. We're talking really filmed theater. "

Olivier de Bruyn:

- "In 2003, Dizzy film with a wonderful animated film," The Triplets of Belleville . "Triumph International. Seven years later, while the 3D glasses places around the world, Sylvain Chomet returning to our screens with a film craft, " The Illusionist ," according to an unpublished screenplay by Jacques Tati. Singularity, of course.
Originally " The Illusionist "should be a film by and starring Tati. The inventor of" Playtime "wrote the screenplay ago half-century under the codename " Film Tati No.4 . The project was never completed. The director considered the matter autobiographical script too serious and it ended up in the archives.
Helped by relatives of the director (Sophie Tatischeff, his daughter, and Jérôme Deschamps and Macha Makeïeff of Deschiens ensure that the radiation of the work of Tati), Sylvain Chomet, absolute fan of the creator of " Uncle "resurrected the script, made some changes (the action no longer takes place in Prague, but in Scotland) and brought her to this film in the form of free tribute. Emmanuel Didier

- " The symbiosis of these two beings abandoned released without mooring, is overwhelming. Tatischeff family leaves for Scotland and Paris, the young Alice on his island for the Scottish capital. They both cut the cords that connect them to their attachments to their disposition as well. Reincorporation a small nest together in a seedy hotel, they (re) learn to use self- without feeling snotty.
This reconquest of identity of two characters, Chomet and Tati have the ability to not add to swarm and touches of slapstick visual - no words, the dialogues are confined as always with a few rumbles almost Tati- inaudible - and absurdities of the most effective. To be honest, the last Tati is measured favorably with previous ones. "

Cecile Mury:

-" That's him with his rings melancholy, long silhouette distracted. It recognizes up pants, a little too short, as if he had continued to grow inside her costume ... Jacques Tati appears before us, reinvented as a hero cartoon. Sacred hocus-pocus, Sylvain Chomet took seven years to develop.
(...)
Illusionist This is as tender and contemplative as the Triplets were comical and disturbing. But we find the sidelong glance, especially if the talent of Sylvain Chomet. Its layout crunches a colorful ruffled a few movements: bloated faces of the pillars of bar manager's quickdraw encased in his suit to the fashion, gestures of a tired old artist out of breath. Especially, the director kept his wry love for all the bric-a-brac retro old bangers, weathered storefronts and houses askew. This past world fleet between realism and poetry. A secondhand magic patiently "restored" by hand. Sylvain Chomet still believes in the old magic, the rabbits in hats and brushes on the leaves.

Jean-Luc Douin:

- "Sylvain Chomet truffle with malice that story without words (where everything is sound effects) references to the work of Tati. The job booster found in Scotland by the illusionist is an employee confused by the garage auto mechanics (see Traffic), as clumsy with a hose of the Hulot Holidays . His purchase of a string of sausages is a reminder of My uncle, a film projected in a room where the hero Edinburgh between a look. And where the metamorphosis of the daughter of the concierge seductive woman announced that, here, the country girl in love with Scottish city.
The Illusionist recounts in some way the lives of Tati knew that the hungry and unemployed, was forced to win contracts abroad, among other Parade (1974), where he paid homage the circus. A world is dying, who sees the clown attempted suicide, the ventriloquist and his puppet sell end up like a tramp, trapeze artists to convert back to painters. Disappearance of art, recovered by advertising, the consumer society. Melancholy fact that appropriates probably Sylvain Chomet, a follower of a poetic style in no need of using 3D. "

Arnaud Schwartz:

- "It's beautiful and funny, sweet and tragic as life exciting and sometimes whirling sadness. After The Triplets of Belleville , Sylvain Chomet deploys again all the singularity of his talent. He went to Tati a glowing tribute by giving life to this project by filmmaker buried, probably too close, too sensitive for the big lout who always filmed from the top his modesty. "
